Then, Fortunato is like “Then you are not of the brotherhood.”Īs in the Free Masons? Like the Illuminati? Am I trippin’ or is that what they’re talking about? Seems sus, but okay. Fortunato makes some drunken gesture, and Montresor plays dumb, pretending to not understand. Here comes the most interesting part to me. Because he was already drunk before even running into Montresor. How this man is still conscious, who’s to say. Of course, Fortunato is just like “Homie, it’s fine, let’s keep going, but can we drink another bottle of wine though?”. Montresor is like “Dude, let’s go back, I don’t want you to get sick because of me”. Bit foretelling isn’t it?įortunato finishes yet another bottle of wine, as they come upon the “nitre” (toxic mold) in the catacombs. And our narrator replies with “ Nemo me impune lacessit.” And if you don’t know, that means something akin to “No one provokes me with impunity”. Montresor shares some information about his family, which prompts Fortunato to ask about the Montresor family motto. So, what does the narrator do? He hands Fortunato another bottle of wine, getting him even more sauced.

They seem to go on forever, so long that Fortunato tops off the rest of the bottle of wine.

It’s hilarious because Fortunato takes the wine and says “‘I drink,’ he said, ‘to the buried that repose around us.” And in a similar fashion, Montresor replies “And I to your long life.” That sly dog.Ĭatacombs are usually large, but the Montresor family puts them to shame. Montresor snatches a wine bottle off to the side, and opens it, offering it to Fortunato. The fact that there are old bones and skeletons scattered around them, even makes the obscenely drunk guy uneasy, but Montresor (the narrator) ensures all is well, and the wine is just further down. Wanna know the creepiest part? Can you say foreshadowing? Because not only is this underground cellar used as a wine cellar, but it is also a catacomb for the Montresor house (the narrator’s family). Maybe another time?” but he knows it’s like reverse psychology on a toddler, and it does indeed work. But the narrator is all like “Ahhhh, buddy, you’re drunk, and the cellar is cold and has this gross mold in it. But he doesn’t know if it is truly Amontillado or not, and wants to check its authenticity.įortunato gets excited, and wants to go try this wine in the narrator’s wine cellar immediately. Our dear narrator tells Fortunato that he has just purchased a cask of wine – specifically, Amontillado. The narrator also says that Fortunato spoke to him kindly, but only because he was absolutely blitzed, implying that this would not otherwise be the case. One evening, during “carnival season” (not sure if that literally means a carnival, or if that means something akin to a wine festival) the narrator spots Fortunato drunk off his ass, and alone walking the streets. Dude loved wine, and it would eventually cost him because the narrator just so happens to have a wonderful collection of wine, being quite the connoisseur himself. But the one part of his personality that wasn’t fake would be that Fortunato was quite the wine connoisseur.

The short story opens with the narrator saying “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” Fortunato had hurt the narrator a thousand times in the past, and he allowed it to happen, but he vowed that now Fortunato had gone too far by insulting his family name.Īnd the narrator claims that revenge is not complete unless Fortunato knows it is he who is enacting this plot.įortunato often acted insincere or fake to fit in with other rich people, like the whole group of them put on a show for one another. The Cask of Amontillado is quite the vengeance story, and while the tactics may have been brutal, even as a kid I was cheering on the narrator. I read Poe at a really young age (probably a little too young based on how much it would creep me out back then) and I was always drawn to this one.
